Traditionally, pollutants have been viewed and controlled individually, but as time passed, targeted pollutants expanded beyond NOx and SOx to include mercury and carbon dioxide. As the costs associated with pollution control systems have increased dramatically, the focus has shifted to developing cost-effective multi-pollutant control strategies. Nalco Mobotec has created such a strategy based upon the Nalco Mobotec ROFA® system. The ROFA system provides superior mixing and temperature distribution that result in more efficient combustion. Addition of the ROTAMIX® system and other furnace sorbent injection systems results in a highly cost-effective multi-pollutant control system. The Nalco Mobotec ROFA system offers improved, more efficient combustion, with less NOx generated in the furnace and less fuel required to generate a given MW output. Less fuel used for the same MW output helps lower carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions—which can be reduced still further by means of biomass cofiring or firing. The addition of ROTAMIX technology for the injection of ammonia or urea lowers NOx emissions, while furnace sorbent injection (FSI) systems can be applied effectively to reduce SOx and mercury emissions. FSI systems coupled with ROFA technology increase the contact/interface between sorbent and flue gas. This improved mixing reduces sorbent usage while maintaining desired emission levels.
